Have you ever seen the film Let's Scare Jessica to Death? It's from the early 70’s but holds up well, and fits what you are describing exactly. My daughters were recently in New England and did a major detour just so they could take pictures of the old farmhouse where it was filmed for me.

What's the most desolate place you've ever been?
There are small towns in upstate New York and Pennsylvania that are essentially dead places that fit the bill. To me, they have a really creepy vibe.
I also think forests are desolate, especially in the winter. I’d love to visit Australia to see the landscape, although I wouldn’t want to meet Mick!
